In the previous eight seasons, the Oregon State Beavers have spent the holidays getting ready for a bowl game somewhere in the United States.

This season is no different, as for the seventh time in the last nine seasons, the Beavers are headed to a bowl game.

For the first time in school history, the Beavers are headed to the Bay Area and will face the Maryland Terrapins in the sixth annual Emerald Bowl on Friday night from AT&T Park in San Francisco.

This will be the first ever meeting between the Beavers and the Terrapins.

As both a head coach and an assistant coach, Mike Riley is undefeated in bowl appearances.

Riley was the Offensive Coordinator when the USC Trojans defeated the Northwestern Wildcats 41-32 in the 1996 Rose Bowl, Riley was also the Offensive Coordinator when the Trojans defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders 55-14 in the 1995 Cotton Bowl and in 1993, Riley was the Offensive Coordinator when the Trojans defeated the Utah Utes 28-21 in the now defunct Freedom Bowl at Anaheim Stadium.

As a head coach, Riley has led the Beavers to a 55-14 demolition of the New Mexico Lobos in the 2003 Las Vegas Bowl.

The following season, the Beavers defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 38-21 in the Insight Bowl from what was known as Bank One Ballpark (Chase Field) in Phoenix.

Last season, the Beavers are coming off a Sun Bowl victory last December, where they defeated the Missouri Tigers by the final score of 39-38.

The Beavers rallied from a 14-point deficit to defeat the Tigers, Matt Moore threw for 356 yards and four touchdowns. Moore also ran for a touchdown, as he would go on to win the Most Valuable Player Award.
