The Cincinnati Bengals come to town at Monster Park for a late Saturday afternoon game against the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners hope to avoid a 6-game losing streak at home and 3-game losing streak overall, while Cincinnati aims for its second win in a row.
Shaun Hill, San Francisco’s third-string quarterback, did a superb job filling in for Trent Dilfer when Dilfer was knocked out of Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. Hill was 22 of 27 for 181 yards and managed to get the 49ers’ first and only score and touchdown when he had to come in late during the game.
It seems Dilfer may not play against the Bengals. If that’s the case, Hill will get the chance to play a whole NFL game and hopefully do better than worse in Saturday’s matchup. Hill was able to take advantage of the Vikings’ poor pass defense last week, and he gets the chance to face another poor pass defense team in Cincinnati, and improve SF’s continuing offensive struggles.
It won’t be new for the Bengals to face a third string quarterback however, as they faced Brock Berlin last week when they beat San Francisco’s division opponent, St. Louis last week, 19-10.
The weather should be more favorable for Cincinnati so that may be to their advantage.
Hill had two tipped balls last week so hopefully he’ll be able to see the opposing defense better this time and be able to react quickly to their maneuvers.
San Francisco owns the complete series 9-3, but Cincinnati has won the past 2 games vs. the 49ers.
It would be nice to see Hill help be a bright spot the rest of the 49ers’ season and possibly give them a glimpse towards the future, as SF goes into their final 3 games of the season
They are tied with the Rams for last place in the Western division and tied with the Falcons along with St. Louis for worst in the NFC.
The 49ers are 9-1 when RB Frank Gore has 20+ carries.
