With an end zone interception, the St Louis Rams ended the hopes of a come from behind victory for the San Francisco 49ers as the Rams sealed a 13-9 win Sunday afternoon at Monster Park. It was St. Louis’s 2nd straight victory, both on the road.
Call it tantalizing, with both Bay Area teams’ (Raiders and Niners) games lasting till the final seconds, but the results stayed maddeningly the same, as both teams fell to 2-8. It was the 49ers’ 8th straight loss as the Rams’ Isaac Bruce became #6 on the all-time receiving yards’ list.
SF did pass for over 200 yards for the 1st time this season and have 244 total net yards to St. Louis’s 207, but it could not give the 49ers the win. SF ran for only 32 yards and it was all Frank Gore who carried 15 times.
All of the scores in this game came on field goals except for St. Louis’s opening touchdown.
Torry Holt found himself the recipient of a 3 yard pass from quarterback Marc Bulger at 10:51 in the first quarter to make the score 6-0.
Maurice Hicks fumbled on the 49ers’ opening return, but it was recovered. The 49er’s predictable and fool’s gold play was displayed when Darrell Jackson caught a 29-yard pass but it was spoiled as the subsequent pass was thrown incomplete, and SF was forced to punt.
It seemed like the 49ers’ luck was going to change however, as good defense led to good field position when Michael Lewis caught at the ball at SF’s 45. He took it back to the 41 and threw a lateral to Nate Clements who had a 41-yard punt return to STL’s 18. The frustration set in again though, as the red zone’s 31st offense had to settle for a 28-yard field goal at 4:21 when they failed to get the 6 points. This made the score 7-3.
This started the FG trend.
The Rams’ Jeff Wilkins hit a 49-yarder at 9:46 to make the score 10-3 in the 2nd quarter.
Wilkins made it from 35-yards out in the 4th quarter at 10:28 to make the score 13-3.
Nedney hit another FG as well, this one a 38-yarder with 6:11 to go in the game, to pull the score to 13-6.
The final scoring play in the game came when Nedney hit his 3rd and longest FG for 46 yards, with 1:55 left to go.
On this same drive before the FG, the 49ers’ Trent Dilfer completed a 27-yard pass to Arnaz Battle during a crucial 2nd and 19. Dilfer then completed a 17-yard pass again to Battle. SF couldn’t cut it or get a break even now, when Dilfer threw 2 balls into the end zone, as agonizing as they were close to being caught.
The 49ers’ next and last drive went in similar fashion as Dilfer threw 4 passes for double digits from a starting position at SF’s 11. A final throw from STL’s 21 to the end zone, ended in O.J. Atogwe’s hands.
Game Notes: Gore limped off the field again in the 1st quarter as he still searches for his 1st 100-yard game.
