It was literally all Seahawks, as Seattle scored in every quarter but the third quarter in route to a 24-0 blanking of the visiting San Francisco 49ers despite Frank Gore’s return to the team.
The 49ers had 10 penalties for 53 yards compared to the Seahawks’ 4 penalties for 39 yards. San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith was sacked 3 times, 2 for fumble recoveries and the possession time for Seattle was almost double the amount of the 49ers’.
At 8:22 in the first quarter, Seahawks’ quarterback Matt Hasselbeck made a 1-yard pass to the tight end Will Heller for the first score of the game, making it 6-0. It was on Seattle’s 1st possession and lasted 13 plays. The Seahawks had 4 passes that went for double digits.
Next possession, Smith was sacked and the resulting fumble was recovered by the Seahawks’ Rocky Bernard whose tackle separated Smith’s shoulder last meeting. This gave Seattle the ball on San Francisco’s 21 yard line. The Seahawks didn’t get much after that, settling for a 20-yard Josh Brown field goal at 4:10 to push the score to 10-0.
Following the punt and an incomplete pass, the 49ers were charged with 3 penalties in a row. This pushed them in a hole they could not get out of that possession despite doing better offensively.
Then Seahawks’ D.J. Hackett had a big 46-yard run which led to a 6-yard run by Maurice Morris for another TD to make the score 16-0 at 5:22 in the 2nd quarter. Hackett ended up with 101 yards and Morris rushed 28 times for 87 yards.
Smith had a 45-yard completion to Arnaz Battle to close out the 2nd quarter but that was it as time ran out.
On 2 consecutive Seattle possessions, SF also recovered a fumble and had an interception. They weren’t able to capitalize however.
At 15:00 of the 4th quarter before the point after, it was 23-0. The Seahawks chewed steadily at the 49ers near the end of the 3rd quarter for 12 plays, so that Hasselbeck was able to start the 4th quarter with a 10-yard pass to Hackett for the final score.
Game Notes: The 49ers tried to go on 4th down three times but were unsuccessful in all attempts. They were 1 for 12 on 3rd down conversions. They did recover a fumble however. When defensive end Bryant Young has 1+ sack, SF is 38-20 now.
The Seahawks only allowed 79 yards on the ground. Alexander did not play along with Deion Branch but Marcus Pollard did play.
