New York Giants’ Michael Strahan had 2.5 sacks and the defense capitalized on San Francisco 49ers’ mistakes as NY cruised to a 33-15 win at Giants Stadium, which was the Niners first game after their bye-week last Sunday. The Giants’ Justin Tuck had 1.5 sacks and NY had overall 6 sacks. The defense also forced a fumble which led to a touchdown.
SF committed 4 turnovers in the game. Quarterback Trent Dilfer had 2 interceptions and 3 fumbles, the one not recovered being the TD return. It may have been good that SF quarterback Alex Smith didn’t play today with all the hits by the Giants to Dilfer.
SF defense couldn’t stop the Giants on NY’s 13-play opening drive. The Giants found open receivers, had and created holes and just kept moving the ball. The 49ers committed 2 encroachment penalties, as NY wide receiver Amani Toomer became the franchise TD receptions leader with his 49th TD at 7:47 in the first quarter. These were the 1st points SF gave up on an opening possession this season as Giants’ kicker Lawrence Tynes missed the extra point. The missed PAT was akin to the 5 dropped passes by NY but the overall opening drive exemplified the Giant’s supreme dominance.
The 49ers were able to stop NY’s second drive however when Derek Smith got SF’s fourth interception of the season. The 49ers’ capitalized as the Giants’ Antonio Pierce was called for roughing the passer, Frank Gore had a 16-yard gain through a hole, and the 49ers converted on 4th and 1 to name some of the plays. The conversion was immediately followed by a TD pass to Arnaz Battle for his 2nd of the season at 10:01 in the 2nd quarter and SF took a 7-6 lead. The lead lasted almost 4 minutes.
Momentum changed swiftly when Dilfer fumbled for the 2nd time, giving the Giants the ball at the 30-yard line. NY running back Brandon Jacobs got the score at 6:24 and Tynes made the score 13-7. The Giants never looked back.
Then SF gave up another turnover as Dilfer was intercepted by the Giants’ Sam Madison giving NY good field possession again. Tynes converted the 1st field goal of the game at 2:57.
Tynes later increased the Giants’ lead to 19-7 with a field goal at 0:17.
To start the 2nd half, the 49ers had it going good with a long 47-yard nice pass to Ashley Lelie for his 1st reception of the season. Strahan got another half of a sack but then Pierce was called for unnecessary roughness. However immediately after, Dilfer was blindsided and sacked again by the Giants’ Osi Umenyiora, who forced the ball loose and scored a TD at 13:09 in the 3rd to push the score to 26-7.
SF’s Moran Norris however got a safety when he blocked NY Jeff Feagles’ punt and it traveled to the end zone at 9:01 to make the score 26-9.
In the 4th, Pierce got an interception at the 49ers’ 33 and ran it to their 5. SF’s Brandon Moore got called for roughing the passer and then Giants’ tight end Jeremy Shockey caught a pass in the end zone at 10:59 to make the score 33-9.
With 16 seconds left in the game, SF’s Darrell Jackson had his 1st TD reception as a 49er. SF failed to complete a 2 point conversion attempt.
Game notes: Moore got a sack. Gore limped off the field in the 2nd quarter with a sprained ankle but was able to return before the 1st half ended. Vernon Davis and Jonas Jennings returned to game action. Andy Lee and Shawntae Spencer combined to down the ball at the 2-yard line. The 49ers made a nice third down stop on NY after they got the lead.
For the 2nd time in his career, Brandon Jacobs went over 100 yards as he had a career-high 107. Umenyiora’s sack was his 8th and league-leading.
