SAN JOSE- The San Jose Sharks won their second game of the 2006-2007 season on Saturday Night at the HP Pavilion 2-0 over the New York Islanders, giving San Jose
goalie Evgeni Nabokov his 28th career shutout.
San Jose’s both goals came in the first period, both on power-plays, as the Sharks have definitely improved on their power-play conversions as they went 2-6 in tonight’s contest, and in their overtime victory on Thursday against the St Louis Blues, San Jose went 2-8, giving them 4-10 so far this season in power-play conversions.
At 13:51 in the first period, Captain Patrick Marleau had the puck in the right face off circle, and he passed to the point to Steve Bernier, who then passed it to his left, where Matt Carle, had his second goal of the season, which went on the stick side of Islander’s goalie Rick Dipeito.
Less than four minutes later, San Jose scored again on a play that was almost similar, including the fact it was a power-play, Marleau had the puck on the left boards behind the net, and passed the puck to Steve Bernier at the point, and then Christian Ehrhoff was able to put it on the stick side of Dipeito for the second goal at 17:33, and that would be the scoring in this game.
Dipeito, who was signed to a long term contract by the Islanders during the off-season, had a bad debut on Thursday in Phoenix, giving up two goals in nine shots, and then tonight, he had 25 saves in 27 attempts, which was an improvement over his play on Thursday.
“I think we did a good job eliminated their chances on five on five”, Dipeito said after the game. “Couple of power plays killed us, but we keep building up and moving forward”.
Carle now has his first career scoring streak, has now been instrumental in both of San Jose’s games so far this season. On the goal tonight, Carle found himself with a almost open net as Dipeito was committed away from where Carle was.
“It’s will probably the only time it will happen this season, “ said Carle, “where I got a open net staring right at me, good opportunity there.”
When asked about his goal, San Jose’s Christian Ehrhoff said “Patty Marleau got the puck, in the corner, and I sneaked in from the blue line into the slot and he made the perfect pass to me and I just one-timed it and got it on goal and it went in.”
Head Coach Ron Wilson when asked about the Islanders’ play, “They backed completely off once we had the two power play goals. With our speed, teams are going to have to take penalties, so they want to play aggressive; they are going to have to sit in the box.”
Wilson’s team is now 2-0 in the season, while on the side, the Islanders are now 0-2, and their Head Coach Ted Nolan was still pleased with his team’s performance.
“I thought it was much better than last night (Thursday). That’s one thing we addressed in practice the last couple of days was tightening up defensively five on five, “ aid Nolan. “I thought we handled a pretty explosive team pretty straight up on the five on five.
Sharks /Islanders Notes:
San Jose now improves their record to 10-10-4 all time against the Islanders.
San Jose wraps up their first homestand with a 2-0 record. San Jose now begins a three game road trip that will now take them to Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver next week. San Jose will be in Calgary on Monday with a 5PM PDT face off.
San Jose’s next home game will be on October 17th, when the Dallas Stars come to the Shark Tank.
The Islanders have two more games on this four-game, 10 day road trip. This will be the longest road trip for them this season. Also, this is the 30th of 34 seasons the Islanders started their season away from home-ice.
