SAN FRANCISCO-Since being called up to the big leagues earlier in the season, Eliezer Alfonzo has amazed everyone with his clutch hitting. He did once again, helping the San Francisco Giants defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 before 37,242 at AT&T Park.
Alfonzo smoke a run-scoring double that put the Giants in the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Just one night after hitting his 725th career home run, Barry Bonds had two hits, as the Giants have now won two in a row and seven out of their 10.
Johnny Estrada was the hitting star for the Diamondbacks, as the 2004 National League All-Star went 4-for-5 at the plate, with a single, two doubles and a home run that tied up the game 3-3 in the top of the eighth inning, just one-half inning before Alfonzo’s heroics.
Matt Cain pitched seven innings, giving up just one runs and seven hits, while walking just one and striking out seven.
Ray Durham extended his hitting streak up to 12 games, tying Randy Winn for the longest on the team this season.
With the Giants leading 7-3, closer Armando Benitez came on to get the final three outs, but once again Benitez made it interesting and Felipe Alou went back to the bullpen and brought on Steve Kline.
Despite giving up a hit that pulled the Diamondbacks within 7-6, Kline then settled down and retired the next batter.
It was the first save for Kline since August 22, 2004, when he was a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.
“I think I have pitched one good game on birthday,” said Kline, who celebrated his 34 th birthday on Tuesday.
NOTES: The Giants will look for the sweep, as they will send Jason Schmidt to the mound, while the Diamondbacks will counter with Enrique Wilson.
Before the game, the Diamondbacks traded outfielder Shawn Green to the New York Mets.
