The San Francisco 49ers’ Thomas Clayton was busy as at Bill Walsh Field, San Francisco and the Oakland Raiders met up for a preseason game. Clayton scored the game winning touchdown with 47 seconds left in the game as the Niners won 27-21 over the Raiders on Saturday night.
Battle it was as the game went both ways. The game started out the 49ers’ way but the Raiders battled back. As linebacker Derek Smith stated, “We started off strong, but then they started converting some third downs.”
The Raiders ended their first drive on a fumble, which they recovered. This was followed by a 37-yard punt from Shane Lechler.
Joe Nedney connected on a 43-yard field goal attempt to end the 49ers’ first drive. He later connected for a 50-yard FG attempt to make the score 6-0.
San Francisco’s Mark Roman had a 22-yard interception off Oakland QB Daunte Culpepper. This plus 49ers’ Alex Smith’s quarterback scramble and a penalty against the Raiders led to the first touchdown, 19 yards to Delanie Walker.
Oakland had four penalties in the 1st quarter compared to San Francisco’s zero.
In the 2nd quarter at 9:35, the Raiders got their first score when LaMont Jordan ran 3 yards into the end zone.
Jordan ran for 32 yards. Zack Crockett rushed in for the TD to tie the game and Sebastian Janikowski hit the point after to give Oakland their first lead in the game.
Nedney missed a 45-yard FG attempt.
In the 3rd quarter, the Raiders’ John Madsen eclipsed Jordan’s run with a 44-yarder. Madsen later connected with Culpepper for a 5-yard TD.
San Francisco’s Trent Dilfer came in the game the second half for Smith.
Bryan Gilmore made two catches for 13 and 15 yards, including a nice high catch in the air, in a drive that ended with a TD to Ashley Lelie.
The 49ers and Oakland came into the 4th quarter with the Raiders holding a slim 21-20 point lead and the ball went back and forth on kicks and downs.
Oakland’s Adimchinobe Echemandu was busy as he gained 23 yards one play and had his helmet knocked off at the end. This was followed by a 40-yard missed field goal attempt, the closest to a scoring chance by either team at first.
San Francisco’s Shaun Hill came in the 4th quarter and had a 23-yard scramble. However though the Raiders held the lead from 6:17 of the 3rd quarter that changed when the game clock hit 47 seconds. That was when Clayton scored the go-ahead TD with a 1-yard run.
Oakland didn’t give up that easy however as Alvis Whitted caught a long pass and then just couldn’t hold onto the ball in the end zone with 6-7 seconds left in the game giving San Francisco the victory.
Game Notes: Josh McCown came in for Culpepper for most of the second half.
