Felipe Alou and the rest of the San Francisco Giants are thankful for the speed of second baseman Ray Durham as it was his speed that ultimately helped the Giants to a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, and to give San Francisco a two-game winning streak against the Padres.
In the top of the 8th, with the score tied 2-2, Moises Alou struck out to lead off the inning and then Barry Bonds flew out to straight centerfield right into glove of Mike Cameron, up came Durham.
All Durham did was single to center field in front of Cameron, and then flashed his speed when he stole second just barely avoiding the tag of Josh Barfield at second base.
With Durham at second base, newly acquired Shea Hillenbrand helped out his new team, as he singled to right field that scored Durham with the eventual winning run.
The hitting star of the evening was Eliezer Alfonzo, as the 27-year old rookie went 3-for-4 at the plate, as the Giants made it two straight wins over the reigning National League Western Division Champions.
Hillenbrand’s heroics made a winner of another newcomer to the Giants family, as the veteran lefthander Mike Stanton picked up the win; his fourth win of the season.
Matt Morris went 6.1 innings, giving up just two runs, allowing six hits, while striking out two and walking just one.
In a repeat of Monday’s night 1-0 game, closer Armando Benitez was back on the mound for the Giants in the top of ninth inning, and Benitez went three batters and had his 15th save of the season, and his second save in two games.
Giants Notes:
Game 3 of the four game series will be on Wednesday at Petco Park with a 7:05PM first pitch. San Francisco will have Noah Lowry (5-7,4.12era) on the mound, while San Diego will be sending up Chan Ho Park (7-7, 4.66 era).
