SAN FRANCISCO-The day may have changed, and the month may have changed as well; however the results are the exact same for the San Francisco Giants. What began as a heartbreaking loss to the San Diego Padres on July 23 is now a nightmare for the Giants, as they dropped their ninth straight game with a 4-1 loss to the Washington Nationals before 37,258 at AT&T Park.
The benefactor of the Nationals victory was former Giants pitcher Livan Hernandez, who was making his first appearance in San Francisco since game three of the 2002 World Series against the Anaheim Angels.
In his first appearance in his former home, Hernandez went seven innings, gave up just one run, while allowing six hits to his former teammates.
Once again, Matt Cain was unfortunate loser, as the 21-year old pitched a gem, but received no run support from the slumping Giants offense.
Cain went seven innings, giving up just two runs and scattering four hits. Cain also walked two and struck out seven.
Ray Durham continued to stay hot, as he drove in Omar Vizquel with the Giants only run of the evening with a single off of Hernandez in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Vinny Chulk and Mike Stanton each made their AT&T Park debuts for the Giants, and it was an uneventful first time on the bump for Chulk, as he gave up two runs in the top of the eighth inning that ultimately sealed the game away for the Nationals.
Manager Felipe Alou brought slumping closer Armando Benitez on in the top of the ninth inning.
Despite being booed by the fans, Benitez was able to retire the Nationals in order.
Two major components were out of the lineup, as Barry Bonds sat out the game, and for the first time since September 22, also against the Nationals, Pedro Feliz did not play.
With Feliz sitting out the game, it broke a 116 consecutive game streak for Feliz, and also broke his streak of 941.2 innings played this season.
