Ray Durham must be loving the situation to be hitting behind Barry Bonds in the San Francisco Giants starting lineup.
Durham hit two more home runs, his 17th and 18th of the season; however Bonds went hitless and the Washington Nationals took game one of the three-game series with an 8-6 victory.
By hitting home runs from both sides of the plate, Durham became the first Giants player to turn the trick since Todd Benzinger accomplished the feat against the Florida Marlins at then Joe Robbie Stadium on August 30, 1993.
With the win, Ramon Ortiz snapped a personal three-game losing streak, and picked up just his just win in his last eight starts.
Ortiz went six innings, giving up five runs and allowing seven hits, including one of Durham’s two home runs and a solo shot to Eliezer Alfonso.
The Giants had a chance to tie up the game in the top of the ninth after the Nationals allowed Alfonso to reach on error, then Mark Sweeney singled; however Nationals closer Chad Cordero was able to settle down and retire the next three batters for his 16th save of the season, leaving Bonds waiting in the on-deck circle.
The tough loss went to Matt Morris, whose record dropped to 8-8 on the season, and in the process broke up a streak that saw Morris win his last five decisions.
