In the finale of a three-game series at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, the Athletics took the rubber game from the Red Sox, 6-4, before a midday crowd of over 30,000, including many delighted children enjoying the last weeks of summer.

Boston scored in the first when Jed Lowrie walked, reached second on Kevin Youkilis’ single to center, and came home on another single by Adrian Beltre. The Red Sox’ bats were then silent until the fifth. In the mean time, rookie left fielder Matt Watson came to bat in the second and hit his first career home run, a solo shot 362’ to right. In the following inning the A’s had another homer, this one by Jack Cust 400’ to deep center with Kurt Suzuki on base as the result of a fielder’s choice.

In the top fifth, second baseman Bill Hall started a Boston rally with a double to right, and stole his fourth base of the season, coming home when Lowrie singled to left. In the bottom of the frame Suzuki singled to left center, reached second on Cust’s base hit to right, and scored on Mark Ellis’ single to left. Ellis and Cust both reached home when Rajai Davis singled to center, although he was put out on a throw to the plate. The score was then 6-4 where it remained.

Oakland southpaw Gio Gonzalez was the winner (now 9-6; 6 ip, 7 h, 4 er, 2 w, 3 k, 1 hr, 1 wp) and RHP Clay Buchholz the loser (now 10-5; 4 ip+ 2 bf, 6 h, 5 er, 3 bb, 2 k, 2 hr, 1 bk, 1 wp). Michael Wuertz picked up his second save in as many opportunities.

The A’s are now a game above .500 at 48-47 and host the AL-Central leading Chicago White Sox at 7:05 p.m. PDT on Friday, July 23. Probable starters are righties Vin Mazzaro (5-2, 3.50) and Freddy Garcia (9-3, 4.37).
