WASHINGTON-When Todd Wellemeyer returns from the disabled list, he mostly likely be moved to the bullpen in place of Madison Bumgarner.
The rookie left-hander was dominant for the second game in a row, as the San Francisco defeated the Washington Nationals 6-2 before 22,403 at Nationals Park.
With the victory, the Giants end their longest road trip of the season with a 7-4 record, including a sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park and two out of three against the Nationals.
Bumgarner was too overpowering for the Nationals bats, as he went six innings, allowing one run, on seven hits, walking not a single batter and striking out six for his second consecutive win.
Leaving after pitching a solid six innings, Bumgarner turned the game over to the bullpen, but Chris Ray was able to get just one out, allowing a walk to pinch hitter Justin Maxwell, a single to Cristan Guzman and another walk to Ryan Zimmerman, before being replaced by Jeremy Affeldt.
The lefty faced only one batter, as Adam Dunn hit one up the middle that deflected off of Affeldt over to Pablo Sandoval, who just missed throwing out Dunn at first base.
Sergio Romo then came on to strike out Josh Willingham with the bases loaded for the second out of the inning, and then Ivan Rodriguez hit a flyball that Aaron Rowand tracked down in center field for the fibal out of the inning.
Travis Ishikawa got the Giants on the board in the first inning, as he drove a Livan Hernandez pitch into right field that scored Aaron Rowand and Aubrey Huff.
Rowand led off the game with a single, advanced to second on a Freddy Sanchez sacrifice bunt, following the Sanchez sacrifice, Huff and Buster Posey walked to load the bases.
Posey stretched his hitting streak up to eight games, as he tripled over the head of Nyjer Morgan to score Sanchez and Huff.
By going 4-for-5 on Saturday night, Posey became the first rookie in National League history to have 19 hits, six home runs and 19 RBI in 10 games (according to the Elias Sports Bureau).
This occurred several times in the American League, most recently by Brian Daubach of the Boston Red Sox during the 1999 season.
Brian Wilson came on for a four out save, it was the 24th save in 26 opportunities for the Giants All-Star closer.
Adam Dunn went 3-for-5 with three singles after striking out against Bumgarner to end the first inning, and grounded out to Juan Uribe in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Hernandez lasted just five innings, allowing five runs on five hits, walking two and striking out four in his final start before the All-Star break.
NOTES: Following the three-day All-Star break, the Giants will return for a four-game homestand, where the New York Mets will make their one and only appearance of the 2010 season.
Jerry Manuel’s rotation for the weekend will look like this: R.A. Dickey will pitch on Thursday night, Jonathan Niese on Friday night, Mike Pelfrey on Saturday and Johan Santana will close out the series on Sunday.
George Washington took the President’s Race for the second consecutive day, overtaking Teddy Roosevelt in the final stretch.
With the victory, Washington moves within two victories of Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln, who lead with 17 victories and Roosevelt remains winless on the season.
