After playing their worst game of the season Tuesday night, the Giants played a more respectable contest Wednesday night, but it was still not enough as the Colorado Rockies were victorious with a 5-3 score , at Coors Field.
Rockies starter Josh Fogg pitched an impressive seven innings while giving up only two runs in the process. He walked only one batter and struck out two while improving his record to 7-5 on the season.
Jamey Wright, the Giants’ starter who had previously pitched for Colorado, didn’t fare as well in the thin air of Coors. He lasted six full innings, but he also surrendered five runs and nine hits while dropping his season record to 5-8.
Catcher Eliezer Alfonzo did his best to keep the Giants close, going 3-for-2 with two home runs in his final two at-bats. The Giants made a spirited last surge against Colorado closer Brian Fuentes in the top of the ninth, as Alfonzo hit a solo some run to left-center with two outs.
Lance Niekro immediately followed with a line single, bringing the tying run to the plate. However, pinch hitter Todd Greene grounded out to third to end the game, giving the three-game series to the host Rockies.
Former Giants catcher Yorvit Torrealba, who has spent most of this season on the disabled list, went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the first inning.
The Giants will now head to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers, who at press time sat a half game out of the top spot in the NL West, which is currently being held by the Rockies and San Diego Padres, who beat Philadelphia on Wednesday.
San Francisco is currently in fourth place, but they are only 1½ game out of first place.
