The Athletics began a three-game series at Progressive Field in Cleveland, shutting out the Indians 3-0, therefore leading the season series 3-2 after the Tribe’s visit to Oakland earlier this year.

The scoring was sparse: In the first, leadoff batter Coco Crisp reached first on a fielding error by Cleveland shortstop Jason Donald, and advanced on Daric Barton’s single to center. After Kevin Kouzmanoff struck out, Suzuki came to bat and made first on a fielder’s choice as Barton was retired 6-4. Ryan Sweeney and Jack Cust drew back-to-back walks; Cust’s brought Crisp home and is an RBI for the Oakland DH. The next and only scoring was in the sixth: After Kouzmanoff struck out again, Suzuki got a base hit when Jhonny Peralta, fielding third, could not field the ball cleanly. The A’s catcher reached second when Sweeney singled to left center on a hit-and-run. After Cust walked for the third time in the game, Mark Ellis’ hit to left scored Sweeney.

The win went to Oakland’s starting southpaw Gio Gonzalez, who came into the game 6-5 with a 3.74 ERA (now 7-5, 3.50; 6.2 ip, 5 h, 4 bb, 5 k); the loser was Cleveland starting righthander Mitch Talbot who came in 8-6, 3.88 (now 8-7, 3.86; 5.1 ip, 5 h, 3 r, 3 er, 4 w, 5 k). Andrew “Daily” Bailey picked up his sixteenth save of the year.

The two teams meet again at 4:05 p.m. PDT on Saturday, July 3, with Jake Westbrook (5-4, 4.69) facing fellow RHP Clay Mortensen, who has come up from Sacramento (AAA) in place of the injured Dallas Braden.

The A’s have agreed to terms with three international free agents, the club announced today. The three players are third baseman Renato Nuñez and left-handed pitchers Anderson Mata and Jose Torres. The A’s also agreed to terms with their 39th round selection in the First-Year Player Draft, catcher John Nester from Clemson.

All three international players are from Venezuela. Nuñez is a 16-year old right-handed hitting third baseman from Valencia and is 6 foot, 1 inches and 185 pounds. Mata, who is 5-11, 165, is 17 years old and is from Margarita. Torres is 16 years old and is from Caracas. He is 6-2, 155. All three players will report to the A’s complex in the Dominican Republic after their contracts are approved by Major League Baseball and after passing physicals.

Also, the A’s claimed right-handed pitcher Jeff Lyman off waivers from the Atlanta Braves and optioned him to Double-A Midland, the club announced today.

Lyman began the season at Triple-A Gwinnett and was 0-0 with a 4.72 ERA in 21 relief appearances. He allowed a .250 opponents batting average, including .145 against left-handed hitters and .329 against right-handers. The 23-year old right-handed pitcher was transferred to Double-A Mississippi on June 30 and made one appearance yesterday, allowing a run on two hits in 1.0 inning. Lyman was originally drafted by Atlanta in the second round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of Monte Vista High School in Danville
