San Francisco Giants players welcome Pedro Feliz (7) and Omar Vizquel (13) into the dugout after they scored on a three-run homer hit by Feliz off of San Diego Padres pitcher Brian Sweeney during the seventh inning of their baseball game against the San Diego Padres Sunday, July 2, 2006 in San Diego. The San Francisco Giants cut the San Diego Padres lead in the National League West to one game on Sunday, with a 6-2 victory, and the Giants can thank a five run rally in the seventh inning, which ended a 2-1 Padres lead going into that inning.
Omar Vizquel's RBI single to right for two RBIs put the Gants out on top 3-2. The Giants Pedro Feliz hit his 13th homer for three runs and the Giants ran away with it from there.
For the Giants starter Matt Morris (W, 7-7 ERA 4.12) went 7.1, four hits, two runs, three walks, six strike outs. San Diego’s starter Chris Young (L, 7-4 ERA 3.13) 6.2 innings, six hits, four runs, one walk, seven strike outs, one homer.
JC and Kenny G's Giant footnotes: The Giants still are not sure what direction they're going with their Spanish broadcasts. Amaury Pi Gonzalez and Irwin Higueros the Spanish broadcasters for the Giants Spanish Radio Network are at a loss as well.
The Giants broadcast only their weekend home games in Spanish and have not been on a full 162 game schedule since 1999.
Amaury who is a host with Sportstalk, and writes a weekly News and Commentary on this website www.sportsradioservice.com , says the decision rests in the hands of Giants CEO Larry Baer. Baer has done an exploration of the market and the market for Latinos to listen to Giants baseball.
Apparently the need isn't in demand according to what Baer and the Giants have done for Spanish radio and he hasn't taken putting the Giants on Spanish radio on a full 162 schedule or at least all their home games seriously.
Pi Gonzalez has told Sportstalk that he would like to really know what direction the Giants want to go for the future of Spanish broadcasts as he holds up a job with the Seattle Mariners for all their home games and Pi Gonzalez added that "it would be nice to know because I like to know my future, where I'm going to be at, how serious are the Giants about the broadcasting games in Spanish and what are the Giants commitments to Spanish radio."
Former Spanish radio salesman Al Dougherty said that the lack of sales for selling Spanish radio was the reason why for the Giants only doing weekend home games.
Dougherty did Spanish sales on the Giants former Spanish flagship station KIQI but the departure was mainly because KIQI wanted to get more, music, talk, and entertainment reports in rather than being pre empted for baseball unless the sales revenue could make up that difference.
Amaury says that he wants to work full time in San Francisco as a first choice as he makes his off season home in Fremont and taking a full time job in Seattle would be the other option because as Amuary says, "we have to eat."
"The people of Seattle have been world class but if I had my first choice San Francisco is my home."
Pi Gonzalez will have a commentary regarding this subject this coming week.
Tim Lincecum the Giants number one prospect inked a $2.025 million deal with the Giants. Lincecum picks up the biggest signing bonus in club history for a drafted player and that price tag buys a lot of rookie cards.
Lincecum lead the country in strikeouts in college at the University of Washington. Lincecum who will not waste anytime showing what he can do as far as throwing a ball through a swinging tire will get his first test in rookie league Salem-Keizer. After that he'll be headed to Class A San Jose.
Lincecum surpassed Jason Grilli on the Giants all time draft salary signing list. Grilli was signed in 1997 for $1.875 million as a fourth round draft pick. "In my opinion he was the best player in the draft and definitely closer to the big leagues than anyone else. My feeling is, he could be (in the majors) this year,"said Lincecum agent Rick Thurman.
Giants’ catcher Mike Matheny caught some pitches in the bull pen in San Diego on Saturday and Sunday and is still at it trying to recover from his concussion. Matheny's rehab has been slow but with a concussion you don't want to rush him as it could turn into a relapse at the slightest jarring, well a less jarring than what originally brought it on for Matheny in the first place.
Fireworks extraordinaire: The Giants trip to Denver will have them starting Noah Lowry in game one of the series (3-5 ERA 3.86). For the Rockies Aaron Cook (6-7 ERA 3.49) gets the go sign and first pitch at Coors is at 5:00PM PDT.
What to look for: It’s a hitter's park at Coors so look for both sides to be out to run up somebody's ERA. When Oakland was in Colorado A's Manager Ken Macha said to watch out for the humidor baseballs in Coors that’s the site where the humidified ball gets tossed into the game moist. The ball is weighted down and in a park like Coors gives the pitcher a half of chance. Macha at the time said it wasn't right what they were doing with humidified baseballs and he wanted to protest to MLB about it.
At the time baseball executive Jimmie Lee Solomon heard Macha's protest against the moisturized balls and said, "he suffers from foot in mouth" and Solomon said he would like to consider other parks using the humidor baseballs.
