These weren't the Pittsburgh Pirates or the Arizona Diamondbacks that the Giants were playing on this recently-completed homestand. And because of their lousy offense, coupled with the fact that the opponents weren't mediocre themselves, the Giants didn't have a whole lot to smile about the past few days.
The Los Angeles Dodgers finished off a three-game sweep of the sputtering Giants by blasting them, 8-2, Wednesday afternoon at AT&T Park while the home team closed out a 1-5 homestand that saw each part of their game come apart at the seams.
Even in the lone victory of the homestand, a 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday, closer Brian Wilson nearly blew a two-run lead in the ninth and needed more than 40 pitches before finally recording the save.
The Dodgers roughed up an overmatched Jonathan Sanchez on Wednesday, tagging him for four earned runs (five total) and six over just five innings, including a pair of home runs in the fifth inning that gave Los Angeles a 5-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Dodgers starter Vicente Padilla didn't have any trouble handling a pathetic Giants offense that managed to score only one run off of him over the course of seven innings. Surprisingly, the lone bright spot in the Giants' lineup was the mightily-struggling Aaron Rowand, who was booed during the Red Sox series over the weekend.
The center fielder had three hits on Wednesday, including a solo homer off Padilla in the sixth inning.
After the game, it was announced that the Giants sent catcher Bengie Molina to the Texas Rangers for reliever Chris Ray, a move that paves the way for rookie Buster Posey to be the team's everyday catcher. Manager Bruce Bochy had said recently that Posey would spend more and more time behind the plate.
