If the Giants hope to be a playoff-contending team, they have to beat teams like the Houston Astros, pure and simple.
Against one of the worst teams in the National League, the Giants came up short and dropped two games at Houston's Minute Maid Park, the latest being a 7-5 defeat during which starter Matt Cain was pounded and knocked out early.
Cain lasted only 2 2/3 innings and was tagged for seven runs and nine hits, the most telling blow coming by way of a two-out, three-run homer in the first inning by Hunter Pence. The Astros scored three more runs off Cain in the second, courtesy of a solo homer by Bay Area native Jason Castro and a two-run double from Lance Berkman.
San Francisco scored two runs in the fourth and seventh innings to close Houston's lead to three before generating another rally in the ninth. Edgar Renteria singled in Aaron Rowand to narrow the Astros' advantage to only two runs, and after Travis Ishikawa added a pinch-hit single, they had two runners on with only one out.
However, Aubrey Huff popped out and Juan Uribe struck out to end the Giants' rally – and the game.
