Barry Zito, who has been magnificent this season after years of unrest, had one of his worst outings of the season on Wednesday during a 6-3 loss to the lowly Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park.
Zito was touched for five runs on seven hits and lasted just four innings, the big hit coming in the second inning, when second baseman Jeff Keppinger laced a three-run double over left fielder Pat Burrell's head, giving the Houston a 4-0 lead.
The final run that Zito surrendered was perhaps the most damning, as his pitching counterpart, right-hander Brett Myers, singled in Chris Johnson to extend the Astros' lead to 5-0.
The Giants rallied a bit in the fifth inning, when a triple by Andres Torres as well as a groundout by Aubrey Huff, who also had a fantastic catch in right field earlier in the game, each brought in runs, but that was short-lived.
The other bright spot for the Giants was shortstop Edgar Renteria, who had three hits to boost his average to .343.
