The Athletics’ interleague trip to the Midwest has not been a happy one so far, as demonstrated by yet another loss, this one at St. Louis, 6-4. The game was actually tied 4-4, when Brad Ziegler took the mound in the sixth to relieve Vin Mazzaro and set down the Redbirds in order. In the next frame, he was tagged by Brendan Ryan and Skip Schumaker for doubles, and the A’s were behind 5-4. After giving Albert Pujols a free pass, Ziegler allowed another hit by Ryan Ludwick, and it was 6-4. The first two Cardinal runs had been scored in the first by former Athletic Matt Holliday’s line-drive homer to left, following Skip Schumaker’s leadoff single; Schumaker scored three of the home team’s six runs.
The Elephants came back in the following frame when new acquisition Conor Jackson, Kurt Suzuki and Rajai Davis all notched RBI hits. The next two St. Louis runs came off Mazzaro in the fifth, when the Gashouse Gang of today racked up two runs on three hits. Schumaker’s RBI in the seventh gave the Cards the edge.
Mazzaro got no decision (5 ip, 6 h, 4 er, 3 w, 5 k, 1 hr, now 5.22 ERA); the loser was Ziegler (2-4, 1.1 ip, 3 h, 2 er, 1 w, 3.18 ERA). The win goes to St. Louis starter Chris Carpenter (8-1, 7 ip, 10 h, 4 er, 1 w, 5 k, 2.83) and the save to Ryan Franklin (#13, 1 ip, 1 k, 1.80 ERA).
Leading the stats at the plate were Schumaker (3-4) and Rajai Davis (4-5).
The two teams meet again on Saturday, June 19 at 4:15 p.m. PDT with Ben Sheets (2-6, 4.93 ERA) facing Adam Wainright (94, 2.41 ERA).
Note: all the pitchers referenced in tonight’s and tomorrow’s games are right-handed.
