Trevor Cahill hurled eight strong innings, pacing the Oakland Athletics past the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 6-1 before a crowd of 12,328 enjoying matinee baseball at the Oakland Coliseum.

Daric Barton drove in one Oakland run and scored two others, and Ryan Sweeney scored three runs for the A’s, who earned a split of the four-game series with the victory.

Cahill (5-2) allowed only an RBI single from Bobby Wilson in the fifth inning. Otherwise, Cahill surrendered six hits and one walk while striking out four.

A’s closer Andrew Bailey pitched a perfect ninth in a non-save situation.

Angels starter Ervin Santana (6-4) retired the first eight batters he faced until giving up two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. The five-inning stint was Santana’s shortest start of the season.

Oakland now prepares for an interleague weekend series in San Francisco without catcher Kurt Suzuki, who was granted bereavement leave due to a death in the family. Also, Manager Bob Geren will miss Friday’s game to attend his son’s high school graduation.

Probables for the Bay Bridge series are (Oakland listed first): Friday – Gio Gonzalez (5-3) vs. Tim Lincecum (5-2); Saturday – Ben Sheets (2-5) vs. Barry Zito (6-2); Sunday – Vin Mazaro (2-0) vs. Matt Cain (5-4).
