Freddy Sanchez said that one of the most memorable moments of his major league career was when he was named an All-Star for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and played in the 2006 All-Star Game at PNC Park.
This weekend was particularly special for Sanchez, as he made his first trip to Pittsburgh for the first time since being traded from the Pirates to the San Francisco Giants last July.
Sanchez left the “Steel City,” on a happy note, as he delivered a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning and the Giants defeated the Pirates 6-5.
The Giants took a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning, as Juan Uribe hit a RBI double and newly acquired Pat Burrell hit a sacrifice fly, but Delwyn Young would not allow the Pirates to go out like that.
Young sent the game into extra innings, as he hit a game-tying two-run pinch hit home run off of closer Brian Wilson in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie up the game at five.
Instead of being demoralized, the Giants went right back to work in the top of the 10th inning ,as Andres Torres hit a double off of Octavio Dotel and then moved to third base on Dotel’s wild pitch.
Sanchez, who went 7-for-13 in the series, then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Torres from third base.
Wilson picked up his second win of the season, and Santiago Casilla picked up his first save of the season and his first save since September 22, 2008, while pitching for the Oakland A’s.
Tim Lincecum went seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out six, his longest outing since going eight innings on May 15 against the Houston Astros, which was also his last win.
