SAN FRANCISCO-Matt Cain may not have gotten off to the start to the season that he wanted, but what an outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Cain pitched a one-hit shutout walking zero and striking out nine and the San Francisco Giants defeated the Diamondbacks 5-0 before 31,495 at AT&T Park.
The one-hitter by Cain was the second of his career, as he pitched a one-hitter against the Oakland A’s at the Coliseum on May 21, 2006, as the Giants defeated the A’s 6-0.
In that one-hitter against the A’s, Jay Payton picked up the only hit of the game off of Cain, a double to lead off the bottom of the third inning.
Cain is the only player left on the team from that game four years ago, as Barry Bonds went 2-for-3 with an intentional walk and a run scored, just one after tying Babe Ruth for second place on the all-time home run list with 714.
Not only did Cain pitch a masterpiece, but he scored the second Giants run of the evening in the bottom of the third inning ,as he walked to leadoff the inning and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Pablo Sandoval that was caught by Conor Jackson in left field.
Freddy Sanchez got the Giants on the board in the bottom of the first inning, as he singled to center to score Andres Torres with the Giants first run of the evening.
Torres led off the bottom of the first inning with a double to left field, and then moved to third on an Edwin Jackson wild pitch, the first of three wild pitches by Jackson on the evening.
Jackson is the fourth Diamondbacks pitcher in team history to throw three wild pitches in the same game, and the first since Dan Haren on August 25, 2009 against the Giants at AT&T Park.
Sandoval gave the Giants third run of the evening in the bottom of the third inning, as he singled off of Jackson to score Torres.
Jackson went seven innings, allowing three runs on four hits, walking five and striking out seven, before being lifted in the bottom of the eighth inning for reliever Chad Qualls.
Sandoval picked up his third run batted in of the evening, and second hit of the game, as he hit his fourth home run of the season and first since against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on April 21.
Aaron Rowand picked up the final run batted in on the evening, as he hit a sacrifice fly to score Aubrey Huff from third base.
Huff followed the Sandoval home run with a single, went to third on a Juan Uribe double.
NOTES: Bengie Molina was originally charged with an error in the top of the seventh inning, as he was unable to catch a pop fly off the bat of Justin Upton. The call was later reversed.
With the victory, the Giants are now 4-0 wearing the Orange jerseys on Friday and improve to 18-4 on the season when scoring first.
