It's usually not this tough against the Washington Nationals, but then again, the Giants were facing an improved ballclub this time around.
The Giants needed a three-run seventh inning, sparked by pinch hitter Nate Schierholtz's RBI single, to get by the Nationals, 5-4, at AT&T Park Thursday afternoon.
Barry Zito didn't exactly have his best outing of the season, but he kept his team in the game. He surrendered three earned runs (four total) and pitched 6 1/3 innings, and this time, his batsmen bailed him out.
The three runs in the seventh gave the Giants a one-run lead, and while Santiago Casilla got the win (1-0) by pitching the final 2/3 of the seventh in relief of Zito, Guillermo Mota and Brian Wilson combined to shut down Washington's bats for the final two innings as the Giants took the three-game series.
Freddy Sanchez is definitely showing signs of life at the plate. After making his season debut last Wednesday after recovering from an shoulder surgery, he had two hits on Thursday, including a two-run single the gave the Giants the lead in the seventh.
