Fresh from a sweep of the San Francisco Giants at the Coliseum, the Athletics journeyed across the country to take on another orange-and-black team, the Baltimore Orioles, with a 5-1 loss in the first game of the series. This time they tried again to improve their road record, with RHP Trevor Cahill (2-2, 3.68 ERA) facing LHP Brian Matusz (2-4, 5.26 ERA). The result was a success with Cahill picking up the win (now 3-2, 6 ip, 2 h, 1 er, 3 w, 5 k, 1 hr) and Matusz the loss (now 2-5, 5+ ip, 8 h, 6 er, 1 w, 4 k, 1 hr).
Oakland started scoring in the first frame, when Rajai Davis singled to right, advanced on Daric Barton’s 1-3 sacrifice, stole third (his first of three stolen bases), and came home on Kurt Suzuki’s single to center. Kevin Kouzmanoff walked, was put out at second on a fielder’s choice which put Ryan Sweeney on first, and both Suzuki and Sweeney scored with Adam Rosales’ three-run shot to left. In the second, Davis hit a bloop single to center, stole second, reached third on a throwing error by catcher Matt Wieters and came home on Daric Barton’s RBI single to left center. In the sixth, Kouzmanoff hit a seeing-eye double down the right field line, reached third when Sweeney singled to shallow left center, and scored when Rosales singled to right. The Orioles’ lone run was a solo homer by DH Garrett Atkins in the third.
The two teams meet again at 4:05 p.m. PDT on Thursday, May 27, with southpaw Gio Gonzalez, fresh from his win over San Francisco (5-3, 3.46 ERA) against a Baltimore pitcher TBA.
The A's recalled catcher Landon Powell from Sacramento today and placed outfielder Coco Crisp on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this season. This occurred after Crisp had played only two regular season games. His present injury is described as a strained intercostal muscle on his right side. In the previous case he broke his pinky finger in a pre-season game at San Francisco..
Powell joins the A's for the third time this season. Previously he has gone 9-for-39 and is known for having caught Dallas Braden's perfect game on May 9 against Tampa Bay at the Coliseum.
