San Jose came back in the third, only to be upset by the Chicago Blackhawks' Dustin Byfuglien in a 3-2 loss in Game Three of the Western Conference Finals at Chicago.
Byfuglien scored at 12:24 of overtime, in his fourth straight game to push the series even further in the Blackhawks' favor, 3-0. He was helped by Dave Bolland and Brian Campbell, as just earlier Chicago had a failed shot attempt on goal. It was the Blackhawks' first win at home since May 3.
The game started off with a scoreless first period and was relatively quiet penaltywise as well. The Sharks received the most opportunities off penalties, with six power play chances, three of them in the third period.
In the second period, San Jose's Patrick Marleau scored first on the power play with his third goal in his last two games and second on the power play during that same timeframe. Marleau was aided by Joe Pavelski and Dan Boyle. As a result, Pavelski received his team-leading sixteenth point in the playoffs and Boyle moved into sole possession of second place with thirteen points.
Chicago also scored on the power play three minutes later, as Patrick Sharp was helped by Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. It was Toews's fifth assist in four games as he established a franchise record with points in now twelve consecutive games.
The teams thus came into the third period with a 1-1 tie. Thirty seconds after being called for tripping, off a San Jose turnover caused by a defensive miscue, Bolland put the Blackhawks ahead 2-1 at 13:05, assisted by Toews.
Later, after Chicago received an icing call, Joe Thornton won a critical faceoff. Dany Heatley and Boyle then aided Marleau, who scored his second of the game at 15:37, to keep hope alive and eventually send the game to overtime.
The Blackhawks won the faceoff battle by a margin of 43-32 and lost the shots on goal battle 46-38. During overtime, however, they outshot the Sharks 11-5.
Game notes: Game Four is Sunday at 12:00pm, televised on NBC for North America and CBC for Canada.
