Jason Bay hit a three-run homer and Dave Williams hurled six strong innings on May 10, as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Giants 5-2 at SBC Park in San Francisco.

Jose Castillo and Humberto Cota also homered for the Bucs, who have hit 18 home runs in May.

Bay, the 2004 National League Rookie of the Year, hit his sixth home run of the year on a 3-1 pitch from losing pitcher Jim Brower (1-1) in the sixth inning. Bay's homer extended his personal hitting streak to nine games.

Veteran lefthander Jeff Fassero, 42, started the game for San Francisco, making his first start since last Aug. 19 against the New York Mets. He retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced -- with only Ty Wiggington reaching on shortstop Omar Vizquel's second-inning throwing error.

Defensively, Bay made a diving catch in center field on a line drive by Pedro Feliz in the fourth.

Jose Mesa worked the ninth for his 12th save of the season and his 22nd straight, one shy of the team record set by Mike Williams in 2000 through 2001. Dave Williams (3-3) allowed two runs and five hits to win his second straight game.

Lance Niekro hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning and despite five strong innings from Fassero, the Giants' weary bullpen couldn't hold the lead. Scott Eyre was injured fielding Matt Lawton's slow roller toward first in the seventh. He was able to walk off the field after he stumbled trying to pick up the ball and his right calf cramped, the same injury he had during spring training. Eyre was listed as day-to-day.

GIANTS-PIRATES NOTES: Giants pitcher Jason Schmidt went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder, joining outfielder Barry Bonds and closer Armando Benitez on the DL. The move is retroactive to Monday. The Giants recalled right-hander Scott Munter from Triple-A Fresno to take Schmidt's roster spot. Munter was 1-3 with a 5.11 ERA in 12 relief appearances with the PCL Grizzlies ... Pittsburgh pitcher Oliver Perez will miss his scheduled start Wednesday because of stiffness in his left shoulder. Right-hander Josh Fogg will pitch on three days' rest in his place ... Vizquel went 0-for-3 and his 11-game hitting streak was snapped. ... At 42 years and 125 days, Fassero became the third oldest pitcher to start a game in Giants franchise history. Only Warren Spahn (44 years and 156 days on Sept. 27, 1965, vs. St. Louis) and Danny Darwin (42 years and 310 days on Sept. 1, 1998, vs. Montreal) were older ... Pirates OF-1B Craig Wilson underwent surgery on his injured left finger and is expected to be out for 6-to-8 weeks ... Lloyd McClendon earned his 295th victory to move into a tie with Gene Lamont for 10th on the Pirates' all-time managerial list.
