Sharks eliminate the Red Wings

The Sharks beat the Red Wings tonight in a classic hotly contested playoff game. The Red Wings had to lay it all on the line as a loss meant elimination. The Sharks outplayed the Wings in the first period.. The Wings applied pressure in both the second and rd periods but could not breakthrough except for a goal early in the second period. San Jose goalie, Evgeni Nabakov rose to the challenge and beat back the Wings
The game summary is as follows.
The 1st penalty of game 5 occurred after 12:42 mark of the 1st period. The penalty was on Detroit’s Johan Franzen. The sharks could not convert on the power play. Johan Franzen picked up his 2nd penalty of the period for hooking with 1:33 left in the period. The period ended with the score tied at 0-0. San Jose attacked the Wings for the entire period and out shot the Wings 15 to 6.
The Red Wings drew 1st blood at the 2:40 mark of the 2nd period on a goal by Brian Rafalski. Franzen and Bertuzzi had assists on the play. It is Rafalski’s 3rd goal of the series..
The Sharks went on their 3rd power play opportunity with 15:13 left in the period. Joe Thornton evened the score with 15:06 left in the period. Dany Heatly got the assist.
The Red Wings went on their 1st power play of the game The Sharks killed the penalty.
Todd Bertuzzi was then called for a penalty at the 12:44 mark of the period.. The Sharks failed to convert as Detroit effectively killed the penalty. Dan Boyle was called for tripping at the 12:11 mark of the period. The Sharks’ Marc-Edouard Vlasic was called for a penalty with 3:59 left in the period. The Wings applied a ton of pressure as the out shot the Sharks 14 to 3. Nabakov was excellent in goal even though the Wings scored a goal.
With 16:48 left in the period, Joe Pavelski was awarded a penalty shot and was denied by the Wings goalie, Jimmy Howard much to the disappointment of the fans.
The Sharks took the lead with 13:o1 left on a goal by Patrick Marleau. It was Marleau’s 3rd goal of the playoffs with an assist to Joe Thornton. With 51.5 seconds left Dan Boyle was called for a holding penalty. The Wings have pulled their goalie to go on the attack. The Sharks killed the penalty. What a thrilling finish as they eliminated the Red wings and now the Sharks move on to the next round against either Vancouver or Chicago.
