Not used to being down three games to one, the Detroit Red Wings stayed alive for at least another game, with a 7-1 win over San Jose Thursday at Detroit, breaking the Sharks' six-game win streak.
The first of Franzen's four goals was enough to take down the Sharks, which came at 7:50 of the first period, as he was helped by Zetterberg and Todd Bertuzzi.
Bertuzzi scored first for the Red Wings at 5:40, on the power play, aided by Franzen and Henrik Zetterberg. The goal was originally credited to Franzen, but changed between the first and second periods. Franzen then scored the next three goals, all in the first period. His second goal came with the aid of Bertuzzi and Nicklas Lidstrom and on his hat trick goal, Franzen scored himself. The three minutes and twenty-six seconds Franzen to score a hat trick was the second-fastest time for a player ever in the NHL postseason. San Jose goaltender Evgeni Nabokov was then replaced by backup Tomas Greiss, who came in for his first shot at playoff experience. Valterri Filppula capped off the scoring in the first period at 18:50, to make it 5-0 Red Wings. Filppula was assisted by Tomas Holmstrom and Pavel Datsyuk.
All three remaining goals in the game came on the power play.
Detroit continued scoring at 3:05 of the second period. Brian Rafalski was assisted by Bertuzzi and Franzen. The Sharks scored their lone goal when Dany Heatley put the puck in, aided by Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. Heatley's goal came at 19:11.
In the third period, the Red Wings added one more goal when Franzen struck again, helped by Bertuzzi and Lidstrom. It was a penalty-filled period, with the majority going to the Sharks, who had twelve, versus the Red Wings' six. The longest penalties went to San Jose's Ryane Clowe and Thornton and Detroit's Kris Draper, all misconducts for ten minutes apiece. The Sharks were outshot 14-3 in the period; in total they were outshot 37-29 during the game.
Assistwise, Bertuzzi had four, and Lidstrom, Zetterberg and Franzen had two apiece. San Jose's Dan Boyle led all players with eight shots on goal.
Game notes: Franzen now has points in eleven straight games. When facing elimination, the Red Wings have outscored their opponent 13-2. Detroit's Brad Stuart only played for two minutes and thirty-nine seconds, when he had to leave after suffering a lower-body injury. Game 5 will go back to HP Pavilion and be at 7pm on Saturday.
