ALAMEDA-In his first draft head coach of the Oakland Raiders, Lane Kiffin went with what he knows best, an offensive player.

The Raiders, who went a dismal 2-14 during the 2006 season drafted JaMarcus Russell with the first pick in the 72nd annual NFL Draft at the Radio City Music Hall.

Russell, who played for Les Miles at Louisiana State University and led the Tigers to the 2007 Sugar Bowl championship, where they simply mauled the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 41-14.

In the Sugar Bowl, Russell threw for a career-high 332 yards and two touchdowns in the 27-point destruction.

During his career in Baton Rouge with the Tigers, Russell went 493-for-797 for 6,625 yards, while throwing 52 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in the three years wearing the Purple and Gold.

Russell went 25-4 in the three years playing, after red shirting his freshman year.

With their second pick in the draft, the Raiders traded their pick to the Arizona Cardinals, and promptly took Zach Miller, a tight end out of Arizona State with the 38th pick that was acquired from the Cardinals.

Miller left the Sun Devils with one year of eligibility remaining,.

In his final year with the Sun Devils, Miller became the first consensus All-American for the Sun Devils since current Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs, who last played for the Sun Devils in 2002.

While with the Sun Devils, Miller caught 144 balls for 1,512 yards and 14 touchdowns.
