Photo Sharks clinch Pacific title

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Calgary Flames 2-1 Tuesday in a game that had repercussions for the both of them.

Calgary's loss eliminated them from and allowed the Colorado Avalanche into the playoffs, while San Jose obtained the best record in the Western conference, beating the Chicago Blackhawks by 2 points.

Rob Blake scored for San Jose on the power play at 10:15 of the first period. He was aided by Ryane Clowe and Jason Demers.

Jamie McGinn gave the Sharks their third 2-0 lead in a row at 5:47 of the second period. He was helped by Logan Couture and Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

Rene Borque provided a power play goal for the Flames at 4:20 of the third period. He was assisted by Jay Bouwmeester and Matt Stajan.

San Jose was outshot 39-26 and 15-4 in the third period as Evgeni Nabokov withstood Calgary's furious attempts. The Sharks have been outshot 3 games in a row.

Joe Thornton played 18:18 on the ice and had 2 shots of goal in his second game back from a lower-body injury.

Game notes: McGinn now has three points in three games, Couture four points in five games and Borque six points in five games. San Jose finished with the second-best road record. The Sharks also signed forward Cam MacIntyre from Princeton University. The teams finished 2-2 against each other this season and San Jose finished 2-1-1 on their last regular season roadtrip. Bouwmeester now has played in 422 straight games. Nabokov remains one point behind the New Jersey Devils' Martin Brodeur in wins, as Brodeur won the 600th game of his career. 2 games to go...the Sharks next play the Vancouver Canucks at home Thursday 7:30pm.
