SAN JOSE-Playing without Joe Thornton for the first time since he was acquired by the San Jose Sharks from the Boston Bruins, the Sharks looked to another veteran player.

Devin Setoguchi scored two goals, including the game-winner with 5:49 remaining in the game and the Sharks defeated the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 before a sellout crowd of 17,562 at HP Pavilion.

Thornton missed the game due to a lower body injury that was suffered during the Sharks 4-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night.

With Thornton sitting out the game, his consecutive games streak came to an end at 398 games and it was the first time he missed a game since October 18, 2005, while a member of the Bruins.

Setoguchi got the Sharks on the board in the first period, as he scored his 18th goal of the season off assists from Dan Boyle and Dany Heatley.

That was the score when 2008 Hobey Baker Award Kevin Porter out of the University of Michigan tied up the game just 1:20 into the second period off assists from Cody McLeod and Ruslan Salei.

Peter Mueller gave the Avalanche their first lead of the game, as he scored on the power play from Matt Duchene and Chris Stewart.

Jed Ortmayer tied up the game with 1:23 remaining in the second period, as he scored his eighth goal of the season.

Dan Boyle put the Sharks into the lead with 15:28 remaining in the third period, as he scored an unassisted variety, it was the 15th goal of the season for the former Miami (Ohio) Redhawks defenseman.

Mueller scored his second goal of the game with 10:57 remaining on a shot that went through Thomas Greiss’ legs.

With the victory, the Sharks moved five points ahead of the Chicago Blackhawks for that all important number one seed in the Western Conference.

If the season were to end tonight, the Sharks would face the Avalanche in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

NOTES: Jason Demers was recalled by the Sharks from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Worchester Sharks.

Prior to tonight’s game, Demers played in 45 games for the Men in Teal, tallying 20 points on four goals and 16 assists.

Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson played in his 66th game of the season, breaking the record of 65 that was set by Hall of Famer Patrick Roy.
