The San Jose Sharks can't seem to catch a break lately, as they extended their losing streak to 4, falling to the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 Thursday.
San Jose's unlucky number is two because that is the number of goals they have scored each game during this streak.
The Sharks are now tied for the Western Conference lead with the Chicago Blackhawks, 3 points ahead of the Phoenix Coyotes in their division and 5 points ahead of Vancouver, who San Jose has done well against the past 3 years.
The Canucks' first two goals came in the first period, both on the power play. Alexander Edler struck at 8:31, aided by former Shark Christian Erhoff and Ryan Kesler. Kesler then followed with a goal at 12:14. helped by Edler and Pavol Demitra. Both goals came through screens made by Vancouver's Kyle Wellwood.
At 4:00 of the second period, San Jose's Ryane Clowe made it 2-1, assisted by Joe Pavelski and Kent Huskins. Vancouver's Ryan Johnson provided the game winner with his first goal of the season at 16:48. He was aided by Rick Rypien and Shane O'Brien.
Pavelski scored for the Sharks at 16:52, but it was not enough. He was helped by Huskins and Devin Setoguchi. Pavelski had 9 shots on goal.
San Jose was outshot 13-6 in the first period, but rebounded in the following periods to outshoot the Canucks 34-26.
Game notes: Pavelski now has 8 points in his last 5 games and Clowe has 6 points in his last 6 games. Kesler has 17 points in his last 15 games and Edler has 4 points in his last 4 games. The Sharks continue against the Calgary Flames Friday at 6pm.
