SAN JOSE-- In a more even-tempo game after Thursday's six-goal third period, the San Jose Sharks lost 3-2 to the Florida Panthers in a 1pm weekend game.
As a result, Florida won their first at HP Pavilion in over 10 years, January 8, 2000.
Sharks' coach Todd McLellan seemed to emphasize the positive more, giving credit to the other team, compared to the negative after Thursday's game, with his sights set on the teams' next game versus the Ducks.
In the first period, San Jose's Ryan Clowe scored at 5:32, aided by Patrick Marleau, which was followed by a fight 4 seconds later, between Brad Staubitz and the Panthers' Nick Tarnasky. Teammate Dmitry Kulikov received a holding call at 16:47, and the Sharks capitalized, as Marleau scored on a tough angle to make the score 2-0.
Early in the second period, San Jose's Torrey Mitchell suffered a blow to the ribs. Luckily, he returned to the ice later, but in the meantime, Florida's Keith Ballard scored at 1:02, helped by Radek Dvorak and Gregory Campbell.
22 seconds into the third period, the Sharks' Manny Malhotra and the Panthers' Jason Garrison were cited for fighting . Malhotra also received a 2 minute instigating and 10 minute misconduct call, while Garrison received a 2 minute boarding call. San Jose's Niclas Wallin was called for hooking at 2:30. 31 seconds after the penalty was over, Florida's Shawn Matthias made a solo goal to tie the game.
The Panthers' Bryan Allen scored 2:46 into overtime, assisted by Matthias
Game notes: For the Panthers, Stephen Weiss was able to play, leaving Jeff Taffe, who was brought up again, out as a scratch, with Michal Repik and Kamil Kreps also playing. The Sharks next play the Anaheim Ducks, Sunday at 5pm.
