Jeremy Green and Landry Fields scored 18 and 17 points, respectively, leading Stanford to a stunning 70-61 upset Thursday over No. 2-seed Arizona State in the opening round of the Pac-10 postseason men’s basketball tournament at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The Cardinal, seeded No. 7, move into Friday’s semifinal round. The Sun Devils slipped to 22-10.
The victory moves Stanford (14-17) into the second round, while dealing ASU a serious blow in its chances for an at-large bid for the NCAA Division I tournament.
Though ASU swept the regular season series from the Cardinal, the Sun Devils only led once – by one point early in the second half. Stanford immediately regained the lead with a 15-point spurt sparked by an eight-point individual run by Fields, capped by a 3-pointer with 11:43 remaining.
Stanford outshot the Sun Devils 55 percent (23 of 42) to 39 percent (21 of 54).
Emmanuel Igbinosa added 12 points for Stanford. Rihards Kuksiks topped the Sun Devils with 17 points, 15 of them in the first half. Derek Glasser was next for Arizona State with 14, and Eric Boateng had 11.
Ty Abbott, ASU’s top scorer, was held to 10 points on a miserable shooting night, going 4 of 16 from the floor and 1 of 8 behind the 3-point arc.
Arizona State hit a higher percentage of free throws (.667 to .562), but the Cardinal made more of them, hitting 18 of 32 as ASU committed 23 fouls.
