It’s hard to explain why, but Golden State seemed to operate better offensively Wednesday without their leading scorer.

Star guard Monta Ellis will miss at least three or four more games with a sprained left knee, according to Warriors coach Don Nelson. This news came before the Warriors routed Sacramento 130-98 in Oakland.

Dr. James Andrews, an Alabama physician, confirmed Ellis’ original diagnosis on Tuesday. Ellis, sixth in the NBA scoring race at 26.2 points per game, suffered the injury against Dallas on Feb. 8.

Nelson expects Ellis to return to the Warriors’ lineup by Feb. 25.

In the meantime, C.J. Watson pumped in a career-high 40 points and guard Stephen Curry dished out 15 assists as Golden State hammered their northern California neighbors. Curry also scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Golden State used a 12-0 run to pull away from Sacramento and outscored the Kings 42-16 in the second quarter.

The Kings have lost seven of their last eight games and decided to compound their problems by trading for Houston’s Tracy McGrady. According to NBA sources, Sacramento is sending Kevin Martin, Sergio Rodriguez, Hilton Armstrong and Kenny Thomas to the Rockets in exchange for McGrady, Joey Dorsey and Carl Landry.

If nothing else, McGrady is well-rested, having spent most of the season in the Houston doghouse. The only other revelation is the mention of Thomas, confirming rumors that he is, in fact, still in the league.
