The San Jose Sharks scored the game winner in a shootout against the Detroit Red Wings Thursday, 3-2, as they avoided a season sweep.
This time the Red Wings became the team that tried but didn't make it, as they surpassed San Jose's shots on goal total of 40 Wednesday with 52. San Jose had a total of 26 this time. The only period in which Detroit didn't outshoot the Sharks was overtime, in which each team made 2 shots on goal apiece. San Jose goaltender Evgeni Nabokov and the defense were thus the heros, as Nabokov achieved a career mark by saving 50 of the shots on goal amidst 6 power play chances for the Red Wings.
It was San Jose's game in terms of scoring since the end of first period. Two men with little experience yet as a Shark made contributions, Niclas Wallin and Dwight Helminen. The Red Wings' Johan Franzen scored first on a power play goal at 12:14, aided by Henrik Zetterberg and Nicklas Lidstrom. However, San Jose's Joe Thornton tied it 25 seconds later, helped by Wallin and Boyle. It was Wallin's first assist as a Shark. In addition, with 10 seconds left in the period, recent callup Helminen scored his first goal, assisted by Torrey Mitchell and Scott Nichol.
Detroit though, was able to stay in the game with a goal from Jason Williams at 12:55 of the period, setting up the stage for overtime and eventually the shootout. Williams was aided by Brett Lebda and Tomas Holmstrom.
San Jose's Patrick Marleau scored during the third shootout round after Red Wings' Todd Bertuzzi's shot was saved.
Game notes: The Sharks' Jed Ortmeyer returned after a 1-game injury break. San Jose collectively also take a breather before next playing the Buffalo Sabres Saturday at 4pm. The teams at youth hockey's top level will converge in San Jose for their first Championship Tournament Series February 12-15.
