Despite 40 shots on goal, the Colombus Blue Jackets' Steve Mason and his defenders didn't waver, as they defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-0 Wednesday.
It was the Blue Jackets' third straight win overall and under their new coach as they played their third game of their five-game homestand and avoided going under 3-0 in their series this season against San Jose. Mason breaks the three trend as he now has four shutouts this season.
Colombus scored a goal in each period amidst 7 combined scoreless power play attempts during the game.
Rick Nash scored at 13:18 of the first, aided by Kristian Huselius and Antoine Vermette.
Jakub Voracek scored at 8:40 of the second, helped by Derick Brassard and Raffi Torres.
Backup goalie Thomas Greiss was pulled with 51 seocnds to go in the game as Vermette scored on an empty netter at 19:36, assisted by Jan Hejda.
San Jose outshot the Blue Jackets each period, especially after the first.
Two more interesting stats concerning Mason: one of the shots on goal he stopped included 10 other players in front of the net and he has only let one out of 91 shots on goal go through during Colombus's winning streak.
Game notes: Vermette now has 7 goals and 7 assists in 16 games. Sharks' newcomer Niclas Walling improved in his second game, with a neutral plus/minus rating, 19 minutes and 32 seconds of ice time and 4 shots on goal. For Colombus, Fedor Tyutin and Derek Dorsett returned from injury. San Jose next takes shot at the Detroit Red Wings, Thursday at 4:30pm.
