After a 4-2 loss, the San Jose Sharks recovered with a 4-2 win against the Saint Louis Blues Thursday, never relinquishing their lead.
Starting with a turnover, San Jose's Patrick Marleau scored just 21 seconds into the game to capture the lead, aided by Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley. Heatley made a shot attempt towards the goal and Thornton was right there behind him afterwards. Teammate Ryane Clowe made it 2-0 at 7:53 of the first period, helped by Scott Nichol and Jed Ortmeyer. Clowe had made a failed attempt at scoring earlier, because of a nice save by goalie Ty Conklin. Saint Louis's Patrik Berglund cut the lead in half on the power play at 9:46, assisted by Paul Kariya and T.J. Oshie, from the top of the zone.
The Sharks got that goal back in the second period, also on the power play. Devin Setoguchi scored at 16:54, aided by Ryane Clowe and Jason Demers, with a nice, agressive and confident maneuver to the front of the net.
Both teams traded goals until the end of the game, with the Blues' Alex Steen scoring at 8:39 of the third period, helped by Carlo Colaiacovo and Berglund. Nichol scored at 15:12, assisted by Ortmeyer and Kent Huskins.
Thomas Greiss got the win in net for San Jose. His opponent, Conklin, also a backup, is still winless on home ice.
Game notes: The Sharks won the faceoff battle by a 31-18 margin. Jamie McGinn and Derek Joslin were sent back to Worcester. With an opening roadtrip victory, San Jose next heads to Phoenix Saturday to face the Coyotes at 5pm.
