He won the Super Bowl before, but with a different club the Green Bay Packers. If Seattle wins on Sunday, Coach Mike Holmgren will become the first head coach in NFL history to win the Super Bowl on two different teams.
The only one to come close to that accomplishment is former Giants and Patriots head coach Bill Parcells who coached two Super Bowl victories with the New York Giants in 87 and 91. Parcells lost to Holmgren and the Packers in 97.
Dan Reeves who coached with Denver and Atlanta and lost four times as Head coach with those teams three times with Denver and once with Atlanta.
Former Chiefs head coach Dick Vermiel has lost one Super Bowl and won another with two different teams. Vermiel lost to the Oakland Raiders in 1981 and won with the St.Louis Rams in 2000 by just getting by the Tennessee Titans.
Holmgren can make get into the records books if he can get by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday at Ford Field, but doesn't focus too much on the record, "I think both the players that have gone through Super Bowl games, and the coaches that have been there that helps. The more you talk about it, kind of explain, kind of pave the way they wont believe what's happening to them. It's different, so we kind of pave the way for them a little bit." said Holmgren.
Coaches getting two Super Bowl victories with two different teams is a rarity, but there’s been some close attempts by the likes of Don Shula, Dan Reeves and Bill Parcells are successful. Parcells could have went to the Super Bowl with three different teams, the Giants, the Patriots and he nearly did it coaching the New York Jets in a 1998 AFC Championship playoff loss.
The year that Parcell's coached the Patriots against a heavily favored Green Bay Packers club with quarterback Brett Favre and at his peak at that time and a great defensive unit lead by the late Reggie White. "Its very draining when you put in all that work and it came down to losing the last game. You just hope for another opportunity" said Parcells.
Holmgren who lost to Denver in 1998 with Green Bay talks more about that loss then his victory against the Patriots. "It was a great football game but I thought that game, it was very difficult for me. to get my guys to believe that the game would really be tough football game. I couldn't get them to believe it. And I tried everything." said Holmgren.
Holmgren is hoping the Seahawks believe in themselves this Sunday so his two rings will read from two different teams for a taste of football history if he can get his wish.
Joe Cronin and Ken Gimblin are co-hosts on Sportstalk on 1430 KVVN San Jose and 1110 KLIB Sacramento and are in the Seattle Seahawks camp for the Super Bowl.
