The New England Patriots will be heading to Glendale for Super Bowl XLII thanks to a Tom Brady touchdown pass in the third quarter to Wes Welker to take the Pats to the Super Bowl. The Pats who were leading by two got the bonus score and it lifted them to a 21-12 victory.
The Pats will see their fourth Super Bowl in seven seasons as they also had a crucial two touchdowns in the second quarter which also contributed to their perfect 18-0 season on Sunday.
Quarterback Tom Brady threw in windy conditions against the visiting San Diego Chargers in Foxborough.
Brady had to face a Chargers pass rush all day and the Chargers narrowed the score to 14-12 at one time and they had a chance to get back in the game but Brady's six yard toss to Welker helped New England squeak out a nine point victory and knock out San Diego out of post season.
For the ground game Laurence Maroney was key to the offense carrying for 25 times for 12 yards and a touchdown which helped the Patriots cause in the second quarter. The Chargers defense was keying in on Randy Moss all afternoon was shut down for one reception and 18 yards.
Asked after the game if the assault charge levied by his 11 year friendship with his Woman friend was on his mind lending to his performance Moss would only say, "we won a big game today and no it wasn't on my mind," said Moss.
Brady threw for 22 completions in the ball game in 33 attempts, for 209 yards, Brady threw three interceptions and threw for two touchdowns passes and got sacked twice. The score was a lot closer than the nine point victory indicated it was more like the two point lead the Pats had in the third quarter before Welker's touchdown catch.
"We'll try to elevate our game one last performance. Now were going some place warm (Glendale), because I'm freezing my you know what off", said Brady a three time Super Bowl MVP right after the game.
Meanwhile the Chargers Phillip Rivers was playing on a bad knee and had trouble throwing in the pocket or just plan avoiding the rush. Rivers couldn't thread some of the passes he normally would have if he didn't have the bum knee. When running in the pocket he was obviously favoring his other knee when trying to throw. It cost Rivers because he threw for two interceptions and couldn't get tracked to get over the top against the Patriots.
Rivers was also missing LaDainian Tomlinson who was also standing on the sidelines with an injury for most of the game. Rivers completed 19 passes in 37 attempts for 211 yards and had no touchdown passes.
After the game in the post game press conference Rivers said that he would go over the knee injury with the Chargers team medical staff and see if knee surgery is necessary. Rivers said he was going to call it day and was prepared for whatever decision the doctors make.
