The San Jose Sharks did so by overwhelming their opponent for the second straight game, as they defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 5-1 Tuesday.
In their last two games, San Jose has outscored their opponents by a 14-2 margin, and 20-5 amidst their current 4-game winning streak.
It was the Sharks third game versus Los Angeles this month and San Jose started this one out by duplicating the 3-0 first period from the previous night's game. Patrick Marleau scored on the power play, aided by Joe Pavelski and Dan Boyle at 5:18. Boyle then scored unassisted at 9:38. Ryane Clowe then made it 3-0 with an assist from Jed Ortmeyer at 16:49. Since 14:06 of the third period of that game, the Sharks scored five straight goals.
Wayne Simmonds of the Kings broke that streak 44 seconds into the second period, helped by Ryan Smyth and Drew Doughty. Marleau, Pavelski and Boyle then struck again on the power play at 13:48 to make the score 4-1.
In the third period, Clowe added a power play goal to his stat sheet with his second goal of the night. It came at 11:59, with assists by Manny Malhotra and Rob Blake.
Except for the first period, Los Angeles outshot San Jose 29-12, for a total 37-24 margin during the game.
The Sharks were 3 for 4 on the power play, as opposed to the Kings who were 0 for 3.
Game notes: San Jose gets a break before playing the Anaheim Ducks Thursday at 7:30 pm.
