(San Jose, CA) -- Eight San Jose Sharks scored en route to a complete route of the Calgary Flames 9-1 at HP Pavilion. Dany Heatley scored twice, Joe Pavelski had a goal and three assists and Evgeni Nabokov made 21 saves for the victory.

Manny Malhotra, Scott Nichols, Jed Ortmeyer, Ryan Clowe, Devon Setoguchi and Rob Blake also scored for the Sharks. The eight different goal scorers in the same game is a Shark franchise record. Nichol and Ortmeyer each added a pair of assists as well.

Former Shark Mikka Kiprusoff was in net for the Flames but was clearly not on his best game allowing six goals before departing the game after the second period. He did make 28 saves before leaving as the Sharks would end up outshooting the Flames 46-22.

It was a big win for the Sharks as they got balanced scoring for a second straight game. “It is nice to see a number of different players on the score sheet and not just 19 (Thornton), 15 (Heatley), and 12 (Marleau),” coach Todd McLellan said.

An underlying theme for the Sharks the past few weeks has been a lack of scoring from those not on the top line. The Sharks exploded against the Flames.

“It is nice to win a game, one like that when you have a little bit of a cushion,” McLellan said.

Pavelski got the onslaught started by scoring the first goal of the game. Right after a power play expired Pavelski found a rebound in front of the net and he was able to put back for the early lead.

Malhotra got his goal skating the puck into the offensive zone all the way to the right face off circle where he wristed a shot that beat Kiprusoff in the five-hole.

“Most of opportunities came form playing good defense and made a couple of nice breakouts,” Malhotra said.

Nichols goal came on great individual effort. With traffic in front of the net, he fired a shot from the blue line. The rebound came out to his left and he followed his own shot and whacked a backhander that beat Kiprusoff for the goal. 3-0 would be the score at the end of the first period.

Ortmeyer was able to put in a rebound shot of another Nichol shot to make it 4-0.

With just over three minutes left in the second period, Heatley scored his first. Dan Boyle took a shot from the blue line that was deflected and slowed by a defender. Heatley scooped up the rebound and was able to wrist a shot past an unbalanced Kiprusoff.

Clowe made it 6-0 with his goal. Persistence was the key. Clowe and Nichol kept trying to whack the puck past Kiprusoff right in front of the net. Kirprusoff made three saves but could never find the puck, eventually Clowe got good wood on the puck and at an angle for it to get past Kiprusoff.

Curtis McElhenny replaced Kirprusoff to start the third period.

Setoguchi got the first goal of the third period, his third in two games. Setoguchi out hustled a defender getting around him for an open look. As he skated in on the goal, the defender lost his stick, but just knocked the puck away enough that it acted like a fake. Setoguchi was able to reach to his left and redirect the puck toward the net and it just slid harmlessly into the goal.

The Flames finally got on the board nearly halfway through the third period. Regher hit a slap shot from the blue line that beat Nabokov.

Blake made it 8-1 on the power play. He fired a shot from near the blue line that snuck through traffic and into the net.

Heatley became the first Sharks to score twice by making it 9-1. Heatley drove the puck between two defenders before passing it to the side. The shot by Jay Leach was blocked and Heatley was there to sweep in the rebound.

The Sharks will have a quick turn around. They are back in action on Tuesday night in Los Angeles against the Kings.
