The New England Patriots who were trying for their third bid for the Super Bowl were truly upset by the lost to the Denver Broncos last Saturday. The Patriots will miss the boat for their third straight trophy as the Broncos win it 27-13 advancing towards the AFC playoff championship.
The Patriots dropped five balls for fumbles, quarterback Tom Brady appeared to have stage fright at Denver's Mile High stage and the Broncos laid out the scoring putting away any offense that only the Patriots used to know about.
With the score 3-0 Pats the Broncos took the lead at 1:42 in the first quarter with a Mike Anderson carry for a 7-3 Denver lead.
Anderson repeated another one-yard scamper for Denver with 43 second left in the third quarter for a 17-6 Bronco lead.
In the fourth quarter the Broncos with a 17-9 lead saw Rod Smith catch a four yard pass from Jake Plummer to put Denver way out past the Patriots for a 24-9 lead.
Brady would throw up his only touchdown pass all game long a four yarder to David Givens to drop Denver's lead to 24-13 at 8:05.
The Broncos Jason Elam would add the finishing touches with a 34-yard field goal as the Broncos win it 27-13.
Stefani's AFC Divisional footnote: Denver’s Champ Bailey at corner back lived up to his namesake helping the Broncos to advance into the AFC Championship with a 100-yard interception. Bailey’s run helped inspire the Broncos and it actually demoralized the Patriot and Brady.
"We gave the game ball out and he got the game ball. So that gives you an idea of what we thought of the play.," said Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan.
In the third quarter Brady tried to get a pass to veteran receiver Troy Brown but Bailey was all over Brown in the end zone, leaped at the pass to Brown to intercept, and ran it back one yard short of a touchdown where he was pushed out of bounds. "Champ just made a great play, that's why he among the best in the league." said Brady.
