The Sharks won their eighth straight game on Saturday night, and they did so by beating the worst team in the Western Conference in the Edmonton Oilers, 4-1, at HP Pavilion.
The Sharks got out to a 2-0 lead after the first period, when Jamie McGinn and Douglas Murray each beat Olilers goalie Jeff Deslauriers. In the second period, the Sharks kept the heat on Edmonton, scoring two more goals, and this time, it was the more prolific goal scorers in the NHL.
Dany Heatley struck with his 24th goal of the year only 43 seconds into the period, and Patrick Marleau pitched in Goal No. 26 of his season at the 13:32 mark of the period to give San Jose a commanding 4-1 lead that gave goalie Evgeni Nabokov more than enough breathing room and allowed the Sharks to cruise to yet another victory.
With their win Saturday night, the Sharks have re-claimed their hold on the top spot in the Western Conference, with the Chicago Blackhawks behind them be a single point. However, San Jose will be in for a battle on Monday, as the resurgent Los Angeles Kings pay a visit to the Bay Area, bringing their 24-15-3 record with them.
Notes: Joe Pavelski was named a member of Team USA's Olympic hockey team that will compete in Vancouver from Feb. 12-28. In addition, Marleau, Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley and Dan Boyle will represent Canada while Nabokov will be in goal for the Russian squad. Backup goalie Thomas Greiss is on Germany's team and Murray will take the ice for Sweden when the Olympics get under way.
