San Jose - The San Jose Stealth and the Minnesota Swarm faced off tonight to decide who would take over the fourth place position in their division. San Jose crushed the Swarm, 16-8.
San Jose has one of the leagues more potent offenses when they come together. Tonight they really came together, starting with a massive barrage of goals in the first half. San Jose put up 11 goals in the first half, while the Swarm were only able to put 1 goal in net. Goal scoring leaders were Duch 3, Johnson 3, Doyle and Rabil with 2.
The Stealth didn’t get that score with offense alone. What has lacked consistency this season is their defense. Lead by secondary keeper Richardson, the defense was also able to shut down the Swarm’s offense.
Enter the third quarter and the Stealth came out quick and strong yet again. The Stealth put up a few more goals on net in the first minute, adding more fuel to the fire. With about 5 minutes left in the quarter, tensions started mounting as Jeff Zywicki flattened one of the Swarm defenders to turnover the ball. This ended up causing pushing, shoving, and energy with 2 players out on penalty. End of quarter the Stealth were leading 14-3.
The Swarm would need a miracle to get back into the game, and they tried to do it. In the first five minutes, they had put up 2 goals, including one that was a power play goal. San Jose wasn’t done though, Kirk would get a fast break goal on transition, and Zywicki almost had a 1v1 goal on keeper, but it was overturned. The Swarm continued to pressure, putting up 2 more goals in quick time.
San Jose was not giving up this game though. The Stealth wanted the victory and came back to score three more goals, finishing up the fourth quarter.
San Jose moves into playoff contention today as they take over that coveted 4th spot in the division. They need to play strong their next two games to ensure they hold that spot.
