San Jose, CA - San Jose Stealth de-railed the winning streak of the Colorado Mammoth tonight in San Jose at the Pavilion. San Jose lost its game last week, but they faced down their division rival tonight and showed their stuff, defeating them 14 to 9.
Colorado opened up the scoring in the first period, and showed a stronger performance. San Jose did put up a few goals on the period, but Colorado was able to put up 4 goals and many more shots on goal.
Shortly into the beginning of the second half, San Jose’s team captain Colin Doyle and Cam Sedwick would score some high energy goals, leading the team to a dominating rally in the second period. Colorado would watch its 5-2 lead erode into a 6 goal run for San Jose, ending the period with the score of San Jose 8, Colorado 5.
Shortly after the third period started, the San Jose scoring streak would come to an end as Brian Langtry of Colorado would score their 6th goal of the night. Five minutes later Jed Prossner of the Mammoth would handily beat a stealth defender one on one to throw in a flashy behind the back shot that beat Roik.
San Jose’s Jeff Zwicki would come back a few minutes later with a goal to show the Mammoth that they were still very much in the lead. He would also follow up with another goal in the third period 6 minutes later.
Minutes later, Colorado’s Jamie Shewchuck would snap in an easy goal past Roik, but on the very next play, Paul Rabil threw in a quick goal to answer right back. San Jose was leading 10 to 8 at this point. San Jose’s late period momentum continued as the Stealth put in a pair of goals right before the third period expired. San Jose 12, Colorado 8.
Colin Doyle really showed his stuff in the third period, as he had an assist on 3 of the 4 San Jose goals. Doyle will also be starting at his 8th NLL All star game in Denver this year.
Fourth period was strong defense and high energy for both teams. Zwicki broke the scoring boards with 6 minutes remaining as he hit his third goal of the night. At this point in the game, Colorado looked to be off its game.
There was much more shooting going on from outside, and many of their passes looked out of control and were being missed. San Jose kept up the energy and sharp play, and they looked much stronger than Colorado.
Stealth rookie Rhys Duchs would find the net again with 3 minutes remaining, putting San Jose up 14 to 8. This would be Duchs 14th goal of the season.
Colorado’s Gavin Prout would find the net a few minutes later on a lofting shot that looked to take a bounce off another Colorado players stick as it went over Matt Roik’s shoulders.
San Jose plays it’s next two games on the road. They will face the Boston Blazers 2/28, and NY Titans 3/1. Their next home game is March 14 as they face the Colorado Mammoth again. That should be an exciting re-match as Colorado will look to avenge their huge loss today.
