It came down to the wire at Xcel Energy Center on New Year’s Eve, as the San Jose Sharks’ Jonathan Cheechoo scored 10 seconds after Minnesota Wild Mark Parrish tied the game 2-2 at 15:22 in a 3-2 San Jose victory. The Sharks are now tied for second place with 10 consecutive road wins in the NHL record book, with four other teams.

San Jose also won all 4 games of a road trip for the first time as they created a 2-0 lead through the first 2 periods, losing the lead, but coming back in the end. They started the game outshooting Minnesota 6-0.

San Jose’s Steve Bernier scored near the end of the first period at 17:38 with his tenth goal aided by Joe Thornton and Milan Michalek for a 1-0 lead. Bernier now has 5 points in his last 3 games.

San Jose’s Kyle McLaren scored his first goal of the season near the end of the second period at 18:21 next, with Michalek and Thornton getting consecutive assists. The score was 2-0 after 2 periods.

The Wild came back in the third however.

First, Dominic Moore scored his first goal of the season against Sharks’ goalie Evgeni Nabokov at 3:37 in the third period, with the help of Stephane Veilleux and Kim Johnsson. This made the score 2-1.

Then Parrish had his unassisted goal, his ninth, which tied the game at 2 apiece.

But then Jonathan Cheechoo struck immediately after at 15:32, also unassisted. It was his fifth goal of the season and twenty-sixth game winning goal since 2003.

Game Notes: Michalek has 8 points in his last 5 games…Thornton has 6 assists and 6 points in his last 4 games.

Minnesota was 0 for 3 on the power play.

San Jose now returns home for a four-game homestand, facing three teams from Canada, and the Columbus Blue Jackets. San Jose will Calgary on Thursday Night, and Blue Jackets will be in town this upcoming Saturday night. Vancouver and Toronto will then complete the home-stand a week later.
