SAN JOSE-- With 2 periods gone and the score 4-0, you would think the game was over and well uneventful for the rest of the game, but the San Jose Sharks and the Vancouver Canucks proved that theory wrong.
San Jose's Ryane Clowe mentioned Evgeni Nabokov's 5 unbelievable saves in the first period and Coach Todd McLellan zeroed in on Nabokov's "first save of the night against Grabner on a 2-1 and that Nabokov "helped us to find the lead." Shortly before the period ended, at 18:35, the Sharks' Foundation Player of the Month Clowe passed the puck to Joe Pavelski on Andrew Raycroft's exposed side, for the 1-0 lead. Pavelski was also aided by Devin Setoguchi.
At 1:57 of the second period, the Sharks' Logan Couture redirected the pass from Marc-Edouard Vlasic to make it 2-0. It was Couture's sixth point in the last 8 games as he was also helped by Torrey Mitchell. Teammate Joe Thornton received a pass from Dany Heatley, and put it in, to make it 3-0 at 5:16. Thornton, who scored his first goal since returning form injury, was also assisted by Patrick Marleau. Manny Malhotra joined the party at 16:41, aided by Mitchell and Douglas Murray.
Things started to get heated at around 8:28 of the third period when McGinn received a misconduct. Then, at 9:08, two roughing, one slashing and one cross checking call occurred. At 9:46, 3 players received misconducts and 2 of those players also received a fighting (major). The most number of players were 6 in the box for San Jose and 3 for the Canucks. At 10:26, the Sharks' shutout was ended as Pavol Demitra scored on the power play, helped by Henrik and Daniel Sedin. Andrew Alberts brought the lead to within two with a shorthanded goal at 12:03, assisted by Mason Raymond. Both Clowe and McLellan commented on the "good emotional game...both teams stood their ground" and the "camaraderie." When asked how he evaluates players when there were 8 left on the bench, McLellan responded, "You look down. If their tongues are in their mouth...you put them on the ice."
Raycroft, in net for Roberto Luongo, couldn't avoid giving up at least 3 goals. Vancouver has given up 3 or more goals in now 5 straight games.
Despite the 4 goals, San Jose was 0 for 7 on the power play.
Game notes: Mitchell had his first multi-point game for the first time in his career. Nabokov is now 6-0-0 at HP Pavilison since 2007-2008 against the Canucks. The Canucks' Shane O'Brien did not play after getting hurt in practice earlier. Nolan Baumgartner played in his place. Raycroft is now 4-1-1 in his last 6 starts. One more game to go...Saturday at 7:30pm against the Phoenix Coyotes.
