The Sharks continue to put distance between themselves and the Chicago Blackhawks as the regular season draws toward the end, and along the way, they ended a team's playoff hopes on Friday.
The Minnesota Wild had their dreams dashed when they were beaten by the Sharks, 3-2, thanks to Logan Couture's winning goal at the 16:09 mark of the third period.
Manny Malhotra, who took a scary shot to the face by a line drive just a week ago but didn't miss any games, got the Sharks on the board in the first period, followed by Scott Nichol's goal at 12:22. However, Minnesota clawed right back into the game in the second, scoring twice to tie the game.
The Sharks won without center Joe Thornton, who was injured in last Saturday's game against Vancouver, when he fell awkwardly into the boards and the immediate outlook wasn't very good. However, Thornton took the ice during Thursday morning's practice and is listed as day-to-day.
San Jose is currently three points ahead of Chicago for the Western Conference's top spot with four games left to be played. This week, they will face some familiar foes of the conference; they go to Colorado to play the Avalanche on Sunday before heading north of the border to take on the always-tough Calgary Flames.
They then return home for Thursday night's game against the Canucks before ending the season next Saturday at HP Pavilion against the surprising Phoenix Coyotes, who had been in the NHL's cellar but this year hold the fourth spot in the conference.
